Rothesay Bowling Club is the oldest of all the Bowling Clubs on the Island of Bute. The present Green, located in Ballochgoy Road, was opened in 1884, but prior to that, the Club played Bowls at the Green situated in Chapelhill Road. A town map of Rothesay from the early 1860's, shows the Green located on the right hand side of Chapelhill Road, this, in the present day, is a Car Park. A report in the Rothesay Express, dated 19th September, 1883, gives details of a meeting held in the town hall, attended by the Directors, Offcials and Members of Rothesay Bowling Club. The main business of the meeting was to discuss the construction of a new Green. Two possible sites were available, one of just over an acre at ground situated beside the Drill Hall in High Street, the other in the Ballochgoy area of just under an acre, both sites were available on a 20 year Lease at a cost of just over £5. 00 per annum, after discussion, it was agreed that Ballochgoy would be the preferred option, and this was agreed by all present. Before the conclusion of the business a proposal was put forward that the new Green should have its own Directors and Offcials, and be seperate from the Chapelhill Green. A counter proposal was also put forward that this meeting resolve that the present Bowling Green at Chapelhill, be retained for public use, and the new Green at Ballochgoy, as the Club Green, both Greens to be under the management of the Directors and Offcials of Rothesay Bowling Club. The proposal and counter proposal were put to the vote, the result being seven votes for the proposal and seventeen votes for the counter proposal. The counter proposal was carried.
